Get Found on Topeka

Oh that Google! One of my favorite things to do is to log on to Google each day and see what the clever artists who design and determine Google.s logo have in store for the world. It always has a date specific historical reference and it is the first thing I do when I wake up. Being a history buff, and a former History teacher, I try to figure out its historical reference with out, well googling it. I am about 75% successful!

Today.s logo cracked me up. Log on to Topeka today, oh I mean Google, and you will see Google.s idea of an April fool.s joke. The words Topeka in big bold letters, what? And on Google.s official blog, I found this post.

A different kind of company name

Early last month the mayor of Topeka, Kansas stunned the world by announcing that his city was changing its name to Google. . Today we are pleased to announce that as of 1AM (Central Daylight Time) April 1st, Google has officially changed our name to Topeka.

Oh that Google! What are they up to now . and what is the significance? If you haven.t been on line lately or turned on the news you may have missed the hub bub surrounding Google.s announcement that it will build a high-speed broadband network and that towns and cities could compete for the opportunity to host the project.

City officials across the country are literally clamoring to become the location for Google.s new super-fast fiber optic network which promises to return results 100x faster . how much faster does it really need to go …

As cities fall over themselves to impress Google and be selected, the nation is getting a much needed relief from news about cheating husbands, infighting in Washington, rising gas prices, Lindsay Lohan.s train wreck of a life (oh should I consult my lawyers ahead of time .. ) and other not so uplifting news.

Town officials and town.s people go to great lengths and some times great embarrassment to win the hearts and minds of Google.s management and selection committee. The mayor of Duluth jumped in the icy waters of Lake Superior, Rancho Cucamonga.s web site got a make over to boast Rancho Googlemania, and the people of Palo Alto boogied to YMCA by the Village People (oh, those poor desperate, unfortunate souls) . and well, Topeka changed its name to Google!

And in turn Google to Topeka! Check out the .official. Google blog in its entirety.

Dorothy we aren.t in Google any more!
